Shopify Discount Stacking: How to Control Which Discounts Combine (and Which Don't)

One of the most common — and costly — mistakes Shopify merchants make with discounts is not controlling how they stack. When a customer applies a 20% off code on top of an already-discounted sale item, and then stacks a free shipping code on top of that, your margin can evaporate before you even realize what happened.

Discount stacking isn't inherently bad. In fact, strategic stacking can increase conversion rates and average order value. But it needs to be controlled — deliberately and precisely.

In this guide, we'll cover:

  • What discount stacking is and why it happens
  • The risks of uncontrolled stacking
  • How to set priority order between discounts
  • How to define which discounts can and can't combine
  • Real-world stacking strategies that maximize profit

What Is Discount Stacking?

Discount stacking occurs when multiple discounts apply to the same order. For example:

  • A store-wide 15% off sale + a "20% off electronics" collection discount
  • A "10% off" discount code + free shipping on orders over $75
  • A BOGO promotion + a loyalty discount for returning customers

Shopify's native discount system applies discounts sequentially — one after another. The order in which they're applied matters because each discount changes the cart subtotal that the next discount operates on.

Example of sequential application:

1. Cart subtotal: $100

2. Apply 20% off → $80

3. Apply additional 10% off → $72

4. Apply free shipping → $72 (shipping cost removed)

Final price: $72 + free shipping. Original price was $100 + $8 shipping = $108. The customer saved $36 (33% off the total).

Is that profitable for you? It depends — but if you didn't plan for it, probably not.

The Risks of Uncontrolled Stacking

Without explicit stacking rules, Shopify applies all applicable discounts by default. This can lead to:

Margin erosion — Two or more discounts compound, reducing your margin more than intended. A 20% + 15% stack isn't 35% off — it's 32% off (20% then 15% of the remaining 80%). But it still feels like a huge discount to the customer. Unintended exclusions — Some discount combinations produce unexpected results. A fixed-amount discount applied before a percentage discount gives a different final price than the reverse order. Promotion conflicts — A flash sale and a loyalty discount both targeting the same products can stack in ways you didn't intend, giving away more than planned. Gaming by customers — Savvy customers will deliberately seek out stacking opportunities. If they notice they can use a welcome code on top of a sale, they'll always do it — even if that wasn't your intention.

How Discount Priority Works in DealCraft

DealCraft gives you two controls for managing how discounts interact: priority order and stacking rules.

Priority Order

Every discount rule has a priority number. When multiple discounts could apply to the same cart, the one with the highest priority runs first.

Why does order matter? Because discounts are calculated sequentially on the running cart total:

  • Percentage first, then fixed: 20% off $100 = $80, then $10 off = $70
  • Fixed first, then percentage: $10 off $100 = $90, then 20% off = $72

The same two discounts produce different final prices depending on the order. In DealCraft, you set the priority for each rule, and the engine applies them in order.

Stacking Rules

Stacking rules define which discounts are allowed to combine and which are mutually exclusive.

Allow stacking — These discounts can apply together. Example: "10% off" code + free shipping rule. Both apply, giving the customer a discount on products and free delivery. Block stacking — These discounts cannot apply together. Only the highest-priority discount applies. Example: Two percentage-off codes — only one can be used per order. Group stacking — Discounts within the same group can stack with each other, but groups are mutually exclusive. Example: "Product discounts" group and "shipping discounts" group — a product discount can stack with a shipping discount, but two product discounts cannot stack.

Setting Up Stacking Rules in DealCraft

Step 1: Navigate to Priority & Stacking Settings

From the DealCraft dashboard, go to Settings → Priority & Stacking.

Step 2: Set Rule Priorities

Drag and drop rules to set their priority order. Rules at the top run first.

Recommended priority structure:

1. Exclusion rules (highest priority) — Remove products from other discounts

2. Fixed-amount discounts — Apply before percentage discounts for consistent results

3. Percentage discounts — Apply to the reduced subtotal

4. Free shipping (lowest priority) — Apply last, after product discounts

Step 3: Define Stacking Groups

Create groups of discounts that can or cannot combine:

Example configuration:

``

Stacking Group A: "Product Discounts"

├── 10% off code

├── 20% off sale

└── BOGO promotion

→ Only ONE from this group can apply per order

Stacking Group B: "Shipping Discounts"

├── Free shipping over $75

└── $5 flat shipping discount

→ Only ONE from this group can apply per order

Cross-group: A and B CAN stack

→ Customer can use a product discount + a shipping discount

``

Step 4: Set Exclusion Rules

Define specific products, collections, or customer segments that are excluded from stacking:

  • Exclude sale items from additional discount codes
  • Exclude clearance products from loyalty discounts
  • Exclude wholesale customers from promotional discounts

Step 5: Test Your Configuration

DealCraft includes a rule preview and simulation tool. Before going live, test your stacking configuration with sample carts to verify the results match your expectations.

Real-World Stacking Strategies

Strategy 1: "Smart Stack" — Product + Shipping

Allow one product discount + one shipping discount. This is the most common and customer-friendly approach.

  • Customer uses a "15% off" code → product discount applied
  • Cart qualifies for free shipping → shipping discount applied
  • Total savings: 15% + free shipping

This works because the two discounts target different parts of the order (products vs. delivery), so the combined impact is predictable.

Strategy 2: "Best Deal Wins" — No Stacking

Only the single best discount applies. No combinations allowed.

  • Customer has a "10% off" code and a "$10 off" code
  • Cart is $80: 10% off = $8 savings, $10 off = $10 savings
  • System applies $10 off (better deal)

This protects your margin completely but may frustrate customers who expect to stack codes.

Strategy 3: "VIP Exclusive Stack" — Segment-Based

Allow stacking only for specific customer segments:

  • Regular customers: No stacking (best deal wins)
  • VIP customers (spent >$500): Can stack one product discount + free shipping
  • Wholesale customers: Can stack up to 2 product discounts

This rewards loyalty without giving away margin on every order.

Strategy 4: "Time-Limited Stack" — Campaign Stacking

During specific campaigns, temporarily allow stacking:

  • Black Friday: Allow all discounts to stack (maximum urgency)
  • Regular days: No stacking (protect margin)
  • Flash sale weekends: Allow product + shipping stack

DealCraft's campaign scheduler lets you set stacking rules that automatically activate and deactivate based on your schedule.

Common Stacking Mistakes to Avoid

1. Not setting any rules

If you don't configure stacking, Shopify's default behavior applies all discounts. This is almost never what you want.

2. Forgetting about automatic discounts

Automatic discounts apply without a code. If you have an automatic 10% off and a customer also enters a 15% code, both may apply unless you've set stacking rules.

3. Ignoring the order of operations

Percentage before fixed gives a different result than fixed before percentage. Always test both orders to see which is more profitable for your specific discounts.

4. Not testing before launch

Always use DealCraft's simulation tool to test your stacking configuration with realistic cart scenarios before going live.

5. Setting rules and forgetting them

Review your stacking rules quarterly. As your product catalog and promotions change, your stacking rules may need to change too.

Monitor Stacking Impact in Analytics

DealCraft's analytics dashboard shows:

  • Stacked discount frequency — How often multiple discounts apply to the same order
  • Revenue impact per rule — How much each discount rule costs you
  • Average discount depth — The effective total discount percentage across all stacked discounts

If you see stacked discounts eroding your margin more than expected, adjust your stacking rules immediately.
